Book Review of Muttering Doggerel
Reviewed by Stuart Band
It’s not often that I would pick up a book of poetry, but I was intrigued by the cover of this one, which sported an amusing cartoon of a Spaniel reading. Liz Cowley has compiled more than 70 short poems, each illustrated by Tony Hannaford, about the musings of life from a dog’s perspective. It’s the type of book you might care to pack should you require a little light reading during a short break away from home, a train journey or if you need a gift for a doggie friend. Liz Cowley’s style is reminiscent of a canine Pam Ayres you will find yourself smiling at each rhyming poem. It is an inexpensive coffee table book that you can dip into time after time. IMPOSSIBLE!
‘No dogs can dream up poetry!” We know that’s something that you’ll say. But why not turn a page or two?
With luck, you’ll change your mind today! Of course we needed human help. We can’t use pens like you all do. But planting verse in human heads Is something that we’ve learned to do. We think it’s called ‘telepathy’ – transferring thoughts, but silently. and poetry, we’re glad to say. and goodness me, how luckily! Thanks to all the kindly humans who listened – and so patiently. and wrote our poems down for us. A dream became reality!
